Kèla Nuevelle

Kèla Nuevelle

Greetings, my name is Kèla Nuvelle, and I’m a West African alternative pop singer/songwriter who’s just getting started in my musical journey. It took me about three months, but I’ve finally completed my first EP entitled Natural Born Kèla and its online release date is set for May 23, 2014.

All songs on the EP are based on true murders/murderers. Inspiration for this EP came from a dark place, during the time I was unemployed. While at home for what felt like eternity, I began watching a lot of true crime TV shows, like what’s on Discovery ID. I began to write songs about stories I saw that emotionally touched me or, in some sick way, I could relate to. (I don’t consider myself a dark person, sometimes all you can write about is what you know, and having lost my job, I was looking at the world through a glass half empty).

My last name Nuvelle means “news” in French. I consider myself a storyteller more than I do a musician/singer, so it was only fitting that I wrote about true events.

I reached out to an old friend of mine, Wise of Team Demo, who owns Depth Charge Studios in Virginia, and he thought the idea was brilliant. Conceptually, I believe this EP broke barriers I had never reached as a writer.

Long story short, I began recording with Wise. I produced one of the songs myself , and I also collaborated with various producers from around the country, mostly online. When my tape was almost finished, I got a job offer. I was so happy that I went back and wrote one last song entitled This Temple, and if you hear it, you’ll be able to sense I was in a different space.

Kèla Nuvelle Studio The message I was hoping to get through with this project (regardless of its initial gore) is, “What doesn’t kill you (unemployment, life struggles, etc.) will only make you stronger.” Out of that bad time in my life, of being broke and decrepit, came what I hope you feel is a beautiful musical project entitled Natural Born Kèla and a new job!

Because this is my first project and it’s one I am very passionate about, I was sure to invest in myself. I paid for my studio time with the best engineer in the area. I paid for a professional to create my website, CD cover and logo. Now, I am paying for vocal lessons and seeking help with artist development, which is how I found Ms. Kahn of Amused Now.

My advice to anyone pursuing this music thing is invest in your craft, both financially and emotionally. Treat this like a business. Don’t do anything sloppily or halfway, and I can assure you nothing you do will be in vain.

Though my strides towards stardom have been small, I feel myself slowly but surely reaching the goals I have musically set for myself, and you can too! Hard work does and will pay off. #WatchMeWork
