I recently interviewed hip hop alternative recording artist Fitz, whose name means Forever In The Zone. I love the Fitz sound. The single She’s My Music is my personal favorite. To me, it’s a cross between hip hop and rap.
When I asked Fitz how he’d describe his music, he told me: “I describe my music as hip hop alternative, because I’m not really the norm in hip hop. I put every different genre in my music. It translates back into the hip hop genre, so I mix them together and that’s what you get when you get Fitz.”
Fitz is a lyricist, so he also writes songs for other artists. Right now, his main focus is his own career, but he’s always willing to write for other artists. “I just love the writing process, so it doesn’t matter if I’m writing for me or other artists, as long as it’s part of music. It’s in my soul.”
Fitz has quite a diverse music background. “A lot of my family members are fans of every genre of music, from hip hop to rock-and-roll to classical. We’re an open-minded family. When I was raised, my ears were open to everything, so I just started to like everything.”
As for music influences, “A lot of artists say they are influenced by artists that are already out, like Eminem and Jay-Z, but my influences are the people around me, my friends and family. They keep me going, they influence me and they push me to do more and strive more and put my soul into music. I see what they go through every day and what I go through every day, and I just put it all in my music.”
Fitz works hard to get the word out: “I’m doing a lot of press and a lot of blogs.” You can find out more about Fitz from his website and on ReverbNation. You can converse with him on Twitter and Instagram. Check out the links below.
Right now, Fitz has a new 5-track EP called Forever coming out. She’s My Music has already released; the next single and video to release is HeartWork. The EP is now available on iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/forever-ep/id916528024
Social media plays a big part in the Fitz strategy. He uses it for more than just marketing: “To me, social media is a great place to find out if your song is touching someone or not. You get a first-hand witness of what people like and what people don’t like. I use that to mold my songs a little bit, get people on my side and build my fan base. I put out videos, let fans know about shows and ask their opinions about songs. It’s going pretty well. They’ve never led me wrong before, so I trust them.”
Fitz advises other artists: “Keep going no matter what anybody tells you about your music. If it’s from your soul, don’t change it. Just keep going. There’s always going to be a window and there’s always going to be a door and you’re going to be right there. The opportunity is going to be right there waiting. Just never give up.” I like that: Never give up.
Fitz admits, “I just have that fire and drive that every Brooklynite has, so that’s what keeps me going.” Fitz has a lot of shows coming up, so if you live near Brooklyn, NY, go and see him live.
