Lee Perreira

I’m a big fan of the edgy rock sound that’s Lee Perreira. Lee was a featured artist last year, when Amused Now helped him raise money to produce his hit EP Melodies for Marie, an EP that honors his grandmother. Now, Lee Perriera is getting ready to release a new video for the single Running from the Rose, the first track from that project.

What’s been happening with Lee Perreira, since we first interviewed him last year? “Living the life; still playing all the time. I’ve been working on a lot of new music as well. The most exciting thing is the new music video we’ll be launching on November 3 for Running from the Rose.”

Lee Perreira sent me a sneak peak link to the video and I love it. The song is really intense. When I asked Lee to tell us about it, he responded: “In a simple way, Running from the Rose is like running from life. You really have to attack the day. I’m very goal-oriented. If you’re not moving forward, you’re moving towards death. It sounds pretty intense, but it’s real though.”

In addition, Lee Perreira gave us some insight into the making of the video, which is very well-produced: “I worked with Eddie Negrete; he runs Raw Images. He’s really, really great, organized and creative. It was a pleasure to work with him. I also worked with Shannon Brown. She helped us fine-tune some stuff, another awesome person to bounce ideas off of. It’s a cool mastermind, when you have a lot of really intelligent, creative people with no egos. You get an awesome product out of it. I think that’s what we have here.”

Lee Perreira also shared more about collaboration on the video: “I like to be around good people. There’s a scene in the beginning with a bunch of friends hanging out. Those are all my friends. They cracked up when I asked them to be in the scene; they stressed out about it. I told them we were just going to hang out, drink some whiskey, play some songs and film it. Then, they were ‘Oh, I can do that.’ The girl in the video is Meg B, she’s a model. I’m not much of an actor, but I knew her presence would pull it out of me, and I think she really did that.”

Lee Perreira with hat I describe Lee Perreira’s music as an awesome tribute to such raw and genuine rockers as Bruce Springsteen and John Fogerty. When I asked Lee how he would describe his music, he told me: “I have a catch phrase that I like to use: Blues infused rock-and-roll. I’m not a blues artist, per se, but there are definitely blues influences in my music. As far as newer artists, like The Black Keys, Aloe Blacc, John Newman and, one of my favorites, Gary Clark Jr., I think I’m somewhere in that realm. If it’s good music, then I like it. I’m not limited to a genre.”

Who does Lee Perreira credit for influencing his edgy sound? “Led Zeppelin was a really big one. Their music is progressive and edgy, but it’s still melodic. I probably came from classic rock, The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, and also the 90’s rock that emulated it and put their own spin on it, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. “

Lee Perreira advises other artists: “Strive to be great; master your craft. I think it’s an ever-evolving process. Tonight, I’m playing at a music festival, and I had rehearsal with this bass player, who’s a better guitar player than I am. His name is Brennan McBride. We sat down after the rehearsal and we talked about music and something that Victor Wooten talks about in his book: What have you mastered? For instance, we mastered the English language. We didn’t do that by going to a class and practicing. We did that because we were surrounded by other masters. We grew up around adults who already spoke, and then we spoke. Over these last few years, I’ve surrounded myself with great musicians, to be influenced by and motivated by. Just being in that circle has helped me increase my skills. I’m still not where I want to be, but I’m going to continue to work at it.”

What’s up next for Lee Perreira? “I have a few things on the burners. Obviously, I have this music video coming out Monday, November 3. I have a live album waiting to get mastered. I’ll probably do a digital release this winter. I think I’m going to try my hand at producing and recording myself. I bought some gear for it, and I’m really looking forward to putting my hand into that realm as well. It’s another way for me to grow as an artist and it can only benefit me moving forward.”

Wow, Lee Perreira is going to have another busy year! We’ll have lots to talk about again, at our next interview. Be sure to watch the video for Running from the Rose when it releases on November 3. It’s awesome.
