Gliceryn

Gliceryn

I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the hottest new dirty rock bands in Seattle: Gliceryn. The four talented members of the band include Andrew Ryan on drums, Devon Johnson on lead guitar and vocals, Christian Durden on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and George Silver on bass and vocals.

I listened to all Gliceryn’s songs and my favorite is Pure. I also love the lyrics from the song Colour. Christian is the primary lyricist for the band.

Gliceryn just formed last summer. Andrew and Christian were friends before they decided to play music together. As Andrew explains: “When Christian showed me his music, I thought it music was really cool. At first, it was just me and Christian. Then, he met Devin and through Devin, we met George. It all came together. We all came together from a different perspective.”

The band has such a unique sound, arising from the fact that the members have a diverse set of music influences. George says he channels Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. Christian has an eclectic list of influences. For this band, he listens to a lot of 80’s and 90’s alternative rock, like The Used, Nirvana, Mudhoney and Senses Fail. Devin listens to a lot of indie music and rock bands, like Modest Mouse and Manchester Orchestra. Being a drummer, Andrew likes all the heavy metal bands and 80’s rock, like Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe.

Every member of the band has an extensive music background. Andrew began playing drums when he was 12, and he got serious about the instrument after playing it for a couple of years. He’s been playing in bands around the club circuit for the last 10 years.

Gliceryn logoDevin started playing violin at age 3 and, at age 9, switched to cello. He still plays cello. He picked up the guitar about two years ago. This is Devin’s first band.

Christian started playing clarinet at age 10, then started playing saxophone and trumpet. He picked up guitar and started singing and writing songs. He played in several bands, met Andrew, showed him some songs that he wrote, and that’s how Gliceryn started.

George started playing upright bass at age 12. He played in Orchestra, Jazz Band and musical theater. When he wanted to play a more contemporary instrument, he started playing rock and heavy metal on electric bass.

Andrew explained how Gliceryn uses social media: “It helps us to connect across the nation, across the city, across the world and (as Devin would like to believe) across the universe. We get to interact with people who don’t get to come out to every show or haven’t had a chance to come out to one of our shows yet. It allows us to bring the personal level back. It’s the four of us and (our manager) Toby all running our Facebook. Our fans on social media really enjoy the fact that we’re the ones doing updates and posting pictures. They feel part of the whole experience.”

As a new band, Gliceryn has a unique perspective and great advice for other new bands who are trying to make it. Andrew started by quoting Bon Scott from AC/DC: “It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock’n’roll.” Christian advises, “Network with other bands and make friends with them. They’re going to get you shows; you get them shows. It’s not really a huge competition; it’s more of a family.”

Right now, Gliceryn is grinding and playing shows, doing as much as they can, because they are so new to the scene. As Christian describes it, “The ball just started rolling really fast, and we just want to keep it rolling.”

To learn more about Gliceryn, to find out where you can see them live or to interact with them on social media, check out the band’s Facebook or ReverbNation page. Each band member also has his own individual Facebook and Instagram account.
